Te Ākitai Waiohua, Ngāti Te Ata, Ngāti Pikiao

Karen brings extensive governance experience from her time as a Commissioned Officer in the NZ Police, before being seconded to the Office of Treaty Settlements to lead negotiations for her iwi, Te Ākitai Waiohua.

Since leaving the Police, she has focused on iwi, marae, and whānau development. Karen currently Chairs the Te Ākitai Waiohua Settlement Trust and is a Trustee of both the Investment and Community Development Trusts.

She also Chairs the Tūpuna Taonga o Tāmaki Makaurau Trust, is a Director for Te Ākitai Waiohua, and serves on the Tūpuna Maunga Authority and Waiohua–Tāmaki Alliance.

Karen Co-Chairs the Tāmaki Makaurau Mana Whenua Forum, Chairs the Pukekoiwiriki Pā Management Committee, and Co-Chairs the Tangata Whenua Committee at Wiri Prison.

She holds roles across local government in justice, health, education, and transport, and is a Trustee of the Tāhuhu Trust and Auckland International Airport Trust. A former member of Houkura and Te Arataura, she has contributed to procurement processes across Crown agencies and Auckland Council.
