Our Story
Ngaa Pou Hauora oo Taamaki Makaurau is the Iwi Māori Partnership Board across Tāmaki Makaurau. We represent mana whenua and mataawaka, working to ensure Māori lead decisions about Māori health. While our connection to this whenua spans generations, over 45 years ago Te Pūaha ki Mānuka was formed — a collective of kaumātua and rūruhi who stood to protect our awa, whenua, and people. This kaupapa led to the creation of Huakina Development Trust, which helped shape our rohe and health priorities during this time.
Today, we carry that legacy forward – partnering with Te Whatu Ora | Health NZ to drive whānau-led, culturally grounded health transformation across the region.
We act as a connector between Māori communities and the health system, ensuring Māori needs, aspirations, and experiences are reflected in decisions that affect us all.
Our mahi includes:
- Listening to whānau to understand their health priorities
- Advocating for Māori-led approaches that reflect our worldviews
- Holding the system accountable for better Māori health outcomes
- Reporting transparently to iwi, hapū, and whānau
- Prioritising kaupapa Māori investment
- Embedding Te Tiriti o Waitangi into health planning and policy
Our strength lies in our partnerships with whānau, iwi, Te Whatu Ora, and others across Aotearoa as we build a health system that truly honours Māori voices and leadership.

Our People
An estimated 92,350 Māori live in our takiwā, making up around 20 percent of the local population and representing 11.3 percent of the total Māori population in Aotearoa.
Ngaa Pou Hauora oo Taamaki Makaurau is led by iwi and hapū with strong ancestral connections to this whenua. Each iwi and hapū within our takiwā has ancestral relationships and history, with well-established marae, pā, and papakāinga on the whenua, which has been occupied over generations. While grounded in mana whenua leadership, our work represents and supports all Māori who live in Tāmaki Makaurau today.
